5 Unique Driveway Styles

Unique driveway

The exterior of your home is just as important as the interior. After all, it determines the first impression made on anyone who passes. Many homeowners overlook the role that their driveway plays in their home’s curb appeal, but it can change the whole look. If you are in the market for a new driveway, consider one of these unique asphalt driveway styles.

Unique Styles for Your Asphalt Driveway

Fortunately, adding some style to your driveway doesn’t have to break the bank or get complicated. You can make your driveway stand out by applying any of the following simple, affordable, unique styles.

Circular Driveway

If you have ever seen a circular or curved driveway, you know that it lends a feeling of elegance or luxury to any home. You don’t necessarily need a large space to pull off a circular driveway, but you might need a little extra room than normal. If you don’t have the room for a fully rounded driveway, try simply flaring the ends or arching the top. With the help of some surrounding landscaping, any unique shape variation (beyond the standard rectangle) really catches the eye.

Landscaped Edges

Even a standard rectangular driveway gets a whole new look when properly edged and landscaped. Consider planting a flourishing flower garden around the outer edges of the driveway. Or, plant uniform rows of trees or shrubs. Landscaped edges help blur the line between asphalt and yard and make the home’s exterior look both unique and effortless. Of course, if you go this route, make sure to plan for the different seasons. Not every flower blooms year-round, so a mix of seasonal plants or strictly perennial plants work the best.

Brick Lining (or Walkway)

If plants aren’t your thing or you don’t want to mess with seasonal blooms, you can always go the brick route. Brick and asphalt complement one another stylistically, and there are few easier ways to dress up your asphalt driveway than with some brick lining. Simply install some patterned, colored, or geometric bricks around the outer edges of your driveway. Raised bricks offer a “framing” element to the driveway and provide uniformity to the home’s exterior. If you are installing a new driveway, you can also plan for a brick walkway in the middle of the asphalt.

Center Decor

If you have the space for it, you can also leave a circle of grass in the middle of your asphalt driveway. This grassy area makes the perfect place for a statement piece of decor. A beautiful tree, classy fountain, or bright flower bed all add a unique flair to your asphalt driveway. Of course, if you go the plant route, make sure you plan around the roots. Otherwise, your roots might intrude on cracks or crevices in your driveway.

Grass Strip

Many gravel driveways feature a strip of grass in the very center. This strip essentially guides the driver as to where the vehicle’s wheels should go. Although not necessary for a driveway, this grass strip does provide an interesting eye-catcher, particularly on long, winding driveways.
